Organizations

The following organizations are dedicated to quality education and guidelines for practice for psychologists, sex therapists, sex addiction therapists and trauma specialists. These organizations also develop treatment protocols for the sex therapy, sex and other behavioral addiction and trauma treatment professionals.

APA The American Psychological Association “is the leading scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States.” Their purpose is to establish and uphold guidelines for the practice of psychology and provide information and knowledge to both practitioners and the general population. IITAP The International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals was founded by Dr. Patrick Carnes, a psychologist credited with the identification of and research in the area of sex and behavioral or process addictions as well as a task-centered approach to treatment. IITAP set forth standards for providers of treatment and provides a training and certification program for Sex Addiction Therapists. It offers continuing education workshops for both patients and therapists. It is via IITAP that valid and reliable assessment measures in the area of sex and behavioral addictions are available. ABS The American Board of Sexology was developed for the purpose of training and certifying providers of sex therapy. The American Academy of Clinical Sexologists provides the training and now offers a Ph.D. in Sexology. Please read more about the board here and the American Academy of Clinical Sexology (AACS) here. AGPA  American Group Psychotherapy Association is dedicated to advancing knowledge and research and providing quality training in group psychotherapy and group interventions. The International Board for the Certification of Group Psychotherapists has established standards of practice and guidelines for the certification of individuals in group practices. EMDRIA The Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is the largest private membership-based organization of its type. It provides standards of practice, training and certification, and research for clinicians who practice EMDR treatment. It provides professional conferences and endorses continuing education and workshops on the topic of EMDR and trauma treatment. For information on EMDRIA, read here.

ICEEFT The International Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy was started by Dr. Sue Johnson in 1998 for the purpose of the provision of education and training in Emotionally Focused Therapy. Its mission is to expand the professional and public awareness of how EFT can help people restore connection in relationships. For more information, they can be found here.

ISSTD The International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation is an organization that provides education and training resources for mental health professionals who provide treatment to those with trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, and dissociation. It offers conferences, training, and education for professionals and the public. For more information, contact them here.

Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness is a nonprofit organization that provides education and activities to those suffering from eating disorders for the purpose of outreach.
